Abstract Hole shrinkages commonly take place under high ground stress. They are usually assessed only by on-thespot analysis and experiences, which are not enough for the prediction and accurate calculation of shrinking. A mathematical model of drilling hole in high ground stress area is established in the paper, thus the calculation formulas for of stress, strain and displacement are derived. With these formulas, the parameters of drilling holes in high ground stress area are calculated, and the stability of the holes is estimated.
